Changing your SIM card does not change your IMEI. Your IMEI is permanently assigned to your device hardware and cannot be changed by swapping SIM cards.
Why SIM and IMEI are completely separate
Your phone has two completely different identifiers that serve two different purposes:
- IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) โ identifies the physical device. It is stored in the phone's hardware and never changes regardless of what SIM is inserted.
- IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) โ stored on your SIM card. It identifies you as a subscriber on a network. This changes when you swap SIM cards.
Think of it this way: your IMEI is like your phone's permanent passport number. Your SIM card is like a visa that can be replaced. The passport number stays the same regardless of which visa you have.
What actually changes when you swap SIMs?
When you insert a new SIM card, the following changes:
- Your phone number
- Your carrier/network
- Your subscriber identity (IMSI)
- Your data plan and calling rates
What stays exactly the same:
- Your IMEI number
- Your device's identity on the network hardware level
- Any blacklist status associated with the device
Why this matters for stolen phones
This is exactly why IMEI blacklisting is effective against theft. A thief cannot evade a network blacklist simply by swapping SIM cards. The device's IMEI is checked independently of the SIM โ so even with a brand new SIM from a different carrier, a blacklisted phone will still be blocked from connecting to any participating network.
This is also why it is important to report your IMEI โ not just your phone number โ when a phone is stolen.
Can an IMEI ever be changed?
In theory, IMEI numbers can be altered using specialist software โ a practice known as IMEI tampering or IMEI cloning. However, this is illegal in most countries and constitutes a serious criminal offence. Legitimate carriers and repair centers will never alter an IMEI. If someone offers to change your IMEI, it is almost certainly for fraudulent purposes.
What about eSIMs?
eSIMs (embedded SIMs) work the same way as physical SIM cards in this regard. Switching between eSIM profiles or carriers changes your subscriber identity and phone number, but your IMEI remains fixed to the device hardware.
