Whether you want to switch carriers, travel abroad with a local SIM, or sell your phone for a better price โ knowing if your phone is carrier unlocked is essential. Here is exactly how to check, for every type of device.
What is carrier lock? When you buy a phone through a carrier on a contract, it is often "locked" to that carrier's network. A locked phone will not accept SIM cards from other carriers until it is officially unlocked.
Method 1 โ Insert a different SIM card
Test with another carrier's SIM
- Get a SIM card from a different carrier (a friend's SIM works fine)
- Insert it into your phone
- If you see signal bars and can make a call โ your phone is unlocked
- If you see "SIM not supported" or "Invalid SIM" โ it is locked
Method 2 โ Check iPhone settings
Settings โ General โ About
- Open Settings
- Tap General
- Tap About
- Scroll down to find Carrier Lock
- If it says "No SIM restrictions" โ your iPhone is unlocked
This works on iOS 14 and later. On older versions, you may not see this field.
Method 3 โ Check with your carrier
Contact your carrier directly
Call or chat with your carrier's customer support and ask them to check the lock status of your IMEI. They can tell you instantly. You will need your IMEI number ready โ dial *#06# to find it.
Method 4 โ Check via Apple or Samsung
Apple: Visit checkcoverage.apple.com and enter your serial number. This shows your warranty and activation status, which can indicate carrier lock status.
Samsung: Visit samsung.com/us/support/warranty and enter your IMEI to check device status.
What to do if your phone is locked
If your phone is carrier locked, you have a few options:
- Ask your carrier to unlock it โ most carriers will unlock your phone for free once your contract is complete or your device is paid off
- Use a third-party unlock service โ paid services can unlock most phones, though results vary
- Wait out your contract โ once the contract period ends, carriers are usually obligated to unlock on request
Does an unlocked phone cost more?
Yes โ unlocked phones sell for significantly more on the second-hand market. A locked phone tied to a specific carrier limits the buyer's options, so they pay less. An unlocked phone can be used globally with any SIM, making it far more desirable. If you are selling a phone, getting it unlocked before listing it can increase the sale price by 15-30%.
Check your IMEI first
Before anything else, verify your IMEI is valid and identify your device model for free.
