iCloud lock โ officially called Activation Lock โ is one of the most important things to check when buying a second-hand iPhone. An iCloud locked iPhone is essentially a very expensive brick. Here is everything you need to know.
What is Activation Lock? It is Apple's anti-theft feature that ties an iPhone to a specific Apple ID. Once activated, the phone cannot be set up, erased, or used by anyone without the original owner's Apple ID credentials.
How does iCloud lock work?
When Find My iPhone is enabled on a device (which it is by default on all modern iPhones), Apple links the device to the owner's Apple ID at the hardware level. This means:
- Even after a factory reset, the phone will ask for the original Apple ID and password before setup
- The lock cannot be bypassed without the original credentials
- Even Apple's own service centers cannot remove Activation Lock without the original owner's Apple ID
- The lock persists through iOS updates and physical repairs
How to check if an iPhone is iCloud locked
Method 1 โ Check directly on the device
- Go to Settings
- Tap the Apple ID banner at the top
- If you can see a name and Apple ID email โ the account is still linked
- Ask the seller to sign out by going to Settings โ Apple ID โ Sign Out
- Only pay once the account is fully removed and you have verified it
Method 2 โ Apple's official checker
- Visit checkcoverage.apple.com
- Enter the iPhone's serial number (found in Settings โ General โ About)
- This shows activation status and whether Find My is enabled
Method 3 โ Try a factory reset
- Ask the seller to perform a factory reset in front of you
- If Activation Lock is active, the phone will immediately ask for the Apple ID after restarting
- If the phone sets up fresh without asking for credentials โ it is iCloud free
What if you already bought an iCloud locked iPhone?
Be very careful here. There is no legitimate way to remove iCloud Activation Lock without the original owner's Apple ID. Services claiming to bypass it are almost always scams or use illegal methods.
Your options if you have already purchased an iCloud locked iPhone:
- Contact the seller and ask them to remotely remove the device from their Apple ID via iCloud.com
- Request a refund โ in most jurisdictions, selling an iCloud locked phone without disclosing it is grounds for a refund
- Contact Apple Support with proof of purchase โ in some cases they can assist, but this is not guaranteed
- File a dispute with your payment provider if the seller refuses
Selling an iPhone? Remove iCloud first
Before selling your iPhone, always sign out of your Apple ID: Settings โ Your Name โ Sign Out. Then perform a factory reset. This removes Activation Lock and allows the new owner to set up the device with their own Apple ID. Selling an iCloud locked iPhone dramatically reduces its value and can expose you to disputes.
